Visitors to the historical city of Carcassonne were in for a dizzying surprise this summer. Bright-yellow concentric circles radiated across the French medieval city’s stone walls. No damage was done to the ancient walls, some of which are about 2,500 years old. The yellow circles are made of thin aluminum glued onto the walls.
Called Eccentric Concentric Circles, the installation was made by Swiss artist Felice Varini. The temporary makeover was to celebrate the site’s 20th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. World Heritage Sites are protected places that are important to world culture and history.
