Back in April, third-grade teacher Cindy Tobeck was already getting ready for Halloween: She was planting seeds for giant pumpkins in her garden in Olympia, Washington.
The pumpkins carved into jack-o’-lanterns typically weigh 15, 20, or even 50 pounds, but giant pumpkins are on a whole other scale. As of press time, the world record for heaviest pumpkin was 2,624.6 pounds! Every autumn, an organization called the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth holds weigh-offs where Tobeck and other giant-pumpkin growers around the globe compete to see who can push the pumpkin to its limits.
In 2016, Tobeck’s hefty 1,910-pound pumpkin won the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California. The prize is paid by the pound! So the most gargantuan gourds get the biggest prizes. In 2017, she grew a 2,002-pound pumpkin—her largest ever.
